Miroslaw Balka (B. 1958 in Warsaw) is one of the Eastern European artists who made their work internationally known after the political and social changes of 1989. In his reduced sculptures and installations made from everyday materials, he explores fundamental themes of human existence.
In the Kunsthalle Karlsruhe, Balka was dealing with the presentation of the valuable holdings of the Old German Painting Collection. The course that he builds in the collection rooms subjects the visitor to a certain system of paths on the one hand, but on the other hand also offers him stations where he can change, get on and off. Balka is specifically concerned with looking at art, more specifically with seeing late medieval masters.

How do we, viewers from the 21st century, perceive this expressive color and the unvarnished depiction of suffering today? Despite the temporal distance, do we recognize death as a timeless theme? Do the images still have something to say to us today and how do we react to the artificial wall of separation that Balka placed before our eyes?
