Contemporary with that of the painters of the Impressionist nebula, the painting of the American James Whistler (1834-1903) offers a stylistic counterpoint while sharing with it a profound sense of rupture, opening the way to an autonomous, liberated and self-reflexive painting. At a time when the world is celebrating the 150th anniversary of the birth of Impressionism (exhibition of the society of painters, sculptors and engravers at Nadar in Paris), this volume chooses to broaden the focus, by addressing the figure of Whistler and the deep and lasting fascination that he exerted, between 1874 and 1914, in France and, more generally, in Europe. The aura of Whistler’s painting is due to its singular style, its grace and its mystery, as much as to the range of sensations that it provokes in a synesthetic approach, in particular in connection with literature and music. It is also due to the extraordinary personality of the dandy painter, provoking uproar and scandal, the source of the fascination shown by so many of his contemporaries, painters and art critics, who further expanded his fame. Or even writers, such as Huysmans and Proust, whose work would fuel “the Whistler myth” through the characters – Des Esseintes in À rebours and Elstir in La Recherche – who were openly inspired by it.

À l’heure où le monde célèbre le 150e anniversaire de la naissance de l’impressionnisme (exposition de la société des artistes peintres, sculpteurs et graveurs chez Nadar à Paris), le présent volume choisit d’élargir la focale, en abordant la figure de Whistler et la fascination profonde et durable que celui-ci a exercée, entre 1874 et 1914, en France et, plus globalement, en Europe.
L’aura de la peinture de Whistler tient à son style singulier, à sa grâce et à son mystère, autant qu’à la gamme des sensations qu’elle provoque dans une approche synesthésique, en lien notamment avec la littérature et la musique. Elle tient aussi à la personnalité hors du commun du peintre dandy, suscitant fracas et scandale, source de la fascination manifestée par tant de ses contemporains, artistes peintres et critiques d’art, qui élargissent encore sa renommée. Ou encore d’écrivains, tels Huysmans et Proust, dont l’œuvre alimentera « le mythe Whistler » à travers les personnages – Des Esseintes dans À rebours et Elstir dans La Recherche – qui s’en inspirent ouvertement.
