Gilbert Fastenaekens (b. 1955) is a Belgian photographer who makes tranquil night images of urban sites, often lonely, deserted places – the backside of the city.
With Nocturnes, the series from the early eighties, he made his international breakthrough. Essai pour une archéologie imaginaire focusses on the industrial sites and urban areas of Lorraine, on behalf of the DATAR photographic mission (1984-1989). These images have above all revealed to the artist a whole imaginary from sites that are nevertheless not dedicated to contemplation. Motorways under construction, nuclear power plants and other industries rise up like the vestiges of an almost mythical dimension.
