Jules Schmalzigaug (1882-1917) is a discovery for many. This one and only Belgian representative of Futurism belongs in the KMSKA, which manages the largest collection of his work in the world. This top talent of the international avant-garde also loved Peter Paul Rubens and James Ensor, two other KMSKA stars. He experimented with singing red and colour pur sang.

Thanks to a generous donation from Galerie Ronny Van de Velde in 2022, the museum can fully explore the fascinating evolution in Schmalzigaug’s creative process. From his earliest academy studies and accentuated city drawings to his futuristic arabesque rhythms that he made in Venice and the later pastels from The Hague and Scheveningen: this collection book gives this colour artist, who died young, the recognition he deserves.

The exhibition Jules Schmalzigaug (1882–1917). Futurismo! runs from September 28, 2024 to January 12, 2025 in the print room of the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp. IN DUTCH, AVAILABLE IN ENGLISH UPON REQUEST)
