The oil painting of Our Lady with the Child Jesus, St. George, St. Donaas and canon van der Paele by Jan van Eyck is undoubtedly the showpiece of the Flemish Primitives collection of the Bruges Groeninge Museum. It is an icon, a crowd puller and without a doubt one of the top works of southern Dutch painting in the fifteenth century. In the light of the van Eyck year 2020, art historian Jean Luc Meulemeester wrote the definitive book about the illustrious panel. This bulky book highlights the historical context in which the work came about and places it in an art-historical tradition. In addition, the technical execution, the iconography and symbolism of the work are extensively discussed and links are made to examples, but also places and interiors, which Jan van Eyck was inspired to some extent with. It also examines later artists who have been influenced by the work – whether or not subtly. Both the figures and the space, the Gothic throne with the carpet and even the tiles, have been repeated several times over the centuries. Canon Joris van der Paele and Jan van Eyck – his art and influence on Bruges – are also explained in detail. This book does not pretend to bring new insights, but because of its completeness and contextualization, it is much more than a thorough introduction. It is an invitation to revisit the much-described painting with a fresh perspective and to fully enjoy the great genius of Jan van Eyck. IN DUTCH!
