Thanks to the experimental nature of his graphics, James Ensor is one of the most important etchers of his time. Even seventy-five years after his death, his prints continue to amaze. This richly illustrated book not only sheds light on the remarkable creative process of his printmaking, but also on the influence of his artistic predecessors, contemporaries, publishers and collectors on its creation and reception.
By comparing the different states of a print, we catch a glimpse of Ensor’s own states of imagination. Not only did Ensor experiment with different etching techniques and edit the engraved plates, he also transformed prints by manually adding to them and colouring them with coloured pencil and watercolour. He also sometimes used coloured inks and printed on different media, such as satin and parchment.
James Ensor and the graphic experiment places Ensor’s graphics in a new perspective and is a lasting source of inspiration for lovers of this idiosyncratic and versatile artist.
This publication is published on the occasion of the exhibition Ensor’s States of Imagination, which runs from 28 September 2024 to 18 January 2025 at the Museum Plantin-Moretus, Antwerp. IN DUTCH, AVAILABLE IN ENGLISH UPON REQUEST!
