Belgian childer, etcher and photographer Jozef Van Ruyssevelt (1941–1985) has created a rich, intense oeuvre in a short period of time, which is still far too little known. A master of the use of color and chiaroscuro, his everyday surroundings were a constant source of inspiration for him – furniture, utensils, plants, walls, windows, foliage, lawns, the surrounding countryside. In his style, the abrupt transitions that were also characteristic of his sometimes exalted, sometimes dejected personality stand out.
This book presents a large number of essential works, many of which have never been reproduced before, supplemented by unpublished photographs from the artist’s archive.
The visual work includes several gouaches frequented by the ghosts of William Turner, John Constable, Vincent van Gogh, Edward Hopper, Cy Twombly or Mark Rothko. But a mind is not an influence. Van Ruyssevelt did not draw directly from their paintings and would not have wanted to do so. The works in question indicate a mysterious, secret pact between painters, with Painting – ‘to be visited’, that is the other meaning of ‘visit’ in this book. IN DUTCH!
