Around 1900, the Belgian painter, draftsman and graphic artist Albert Baertsoen (1866-1922) enjoyed great international fame for the tranquil, melancholic impressions he made of his native city of Ghent. He, and especially he as a visual artist, associated the feeling of unease that characterized the fin de siècle with the theme of ‘the dead city’, which at that time also came to the fore in literature. Baertsoen, however, was much more than ‘le peintere de Gand’, the honorary title that his contemporaries awarded him. He was equally admired for the works he made in cities such as Bruges, Nieuwpoort, Veere, Amsterdam and London. He was also successful as an etcher on an international forum; his graphic oeuvre is perhaps the aspect of his artistry with which he enjoys the greatest fame today.
Parallel to the exhibition in the MSK Ghent, this book sheds light on the individuality and versatility of Baertsoen’s oeuvre for the first time. In various contributions we also get to know him as a well-informed intermediary in the exhibition system of his time and as a generous personality with an impressive international network, who could count the most important national and foreign artists of his time among his friends.
