Portuguese architecture goes beyond the uniform image that is sometimes attributed to it and presents a variety of material, constructive and conceptual approaches that make it immensely rich.

The architecture of the Aires Mateus brothers contributes greatly to this richness and this monograph collects their most relevant works from 2003 to the present day. In its almost 300 pages, 18 projects are compiled, ranging from housing to public and corporate buildings, new construction and rehabilitation.

A photogenic and internationally acclaimed work that tends to be more attractive for its image and representation than for the understanding of the clear and rigorous project research behind it. This publication aims to show that relationship. The materialization of its architecture, whether white, metallic, stone or with other materials, is always at the service of the concept, form and space, therefore the ability of their works to pose a challenge to both understanding and imagination.

The constructive effort is not shown and, although it is evident to the viewer, the difficulty involved in this magic is only intuited, but it is never fully explained. In this sense, the constructive information presented in this publication is a kind of “manual for initiated magicians” capable of reading in details the foundations of the art of architecture.

An essential publication to better understand the work of these masters of architecture, with Portuguese roots but with an universal vocation.
