Impressive publication in which the celebrated photographer Dirk Braeckman and artist Léon Spilliaert meet.

Dirk Braeckman (°1958) and Léon Spilliaert (1881–1946) confront and enter into dialogue with each other with their unique oeuvres. Although the work of the two artists is more than half a century apart, there are numerous visual and thematic similarities. Spilliaert created melancholic compositions of architectural elements, tranquil interiors and misty seascapes.

Braeckman, strongly influenced by Spilliaert, uses photography to create veiled images that balance between dream and reality. They share a fascination for stillness and isolation, often worked out in monochrome tones and special framing.

Publication accompanying the exhibition Dirk Braeckman – Léon Spilliaert: Nachtdieren in Kunstmuseum Den Haag from 12 October 2024 to 12 January 2025.
