Reflecting the Surrealists’ maze-like aspirations, the catalog, like the exhibition laid out in a labyrinth, abolishes the linear approach to movement: its two reading entries represent two ways to enter the Surrealist universe.

One of the two sections gives the reader a poetic overview of the artistic movement, reviewing 14 key dimensions, such as dreams, chimeran the cosmos… This section is illustrated with 250 reproductions of Surrealist masterpieces. The other section presents the political evolution of the movement in 8 stages, from 1924 to 1968. This chronological section is illustrated with 150 documents and archives.

Between the two, the reader will find excerpts from André Breton’s Manifesto, as well as an essay written by Olivier Wagner, conservator at the Bibliothèque nationale de France. (IN FRANS)
