The work of Belgian artist Marie Cloquet (b. 1976) in a sense follows Gerhard Richter’s well-known view of painting after photography. The German artist stated that photography should not be used ‘as a means of painting, but that painting can be used as a means of photographing’.
Belvédère marks a new phase of Marie Cloquet’s oeuvre, in which her artistic practice shifts to in situ interventions and wall installations. The title of the publication is a key to understanding these works of art not so much as images, but as vehicles to obscure vision.
