On Kawara is considered to be one of the most important and radical contemporary artists to emerge in the mid-1960s, and his work resolutely marks the place and time of its production. Published on the occasion of an eponymous exhibition at the Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens, this book highlights the Japanese conceptual artist’s production in 1966, the year following his move to New York City and a key phase in his oeuvre. It was then that he began working on his world-famous “date paintings”, in dialogue with curator Tommy Simoens, the final project Kawara undertook in his life. The exhibition marks the first institutional showing of his work in Belgium since 1975.
